♠♠♠ BUILD LOG ♠♠♠

March 2005

Bought a 109,000km MX83 in Niagra Falls, Ontario. I already had a grey MX83, and had bought JZX81 Tein HA dampers, and a nice TOM'S steering wheel by Personal, but I needed a better chassis, so i found this one, cheap, straight, and ready to tear apart.

Front JZ sump to replace the mid JZA70 sump, Asked this eBay seller if they had any front sumps because it was listed in their auctions that they sell the sump you want when you buy their engines. He sold me one for $200, a bit pricey, could be found for less. Also it was shipped to me with a hacked oil drain, one of the drain fittings was cut off for a single turbo but never welded up, thankfully, had to have it repaired at about $40cdn cost. I also got a great hookup on jzx81 engine mounts from oreofreak on the jzxproject.com/bbs

Sept. 5, 05

The entire month of August I've been cutting out rusted metal and welding in new sections in the bodywork. There was some nasty amounts of Bondo in the rear fenders. All rust was cosmetic, but it allowed me to roll out the rear fenders to the max. since the rear fender lip was either gone or simply rusted apart, I was able to hammer it out flush with the inside fender shape, and weld it back together. It's now all completely patched and fully welded, and is probably stronger than when it was new. I am also cutting and welding the front fenders (I bought 2 new front fenders @ $33cdn each) and I am grinding and fiberglassing them out to look smooth. I plan on using a +15 offset rim in the front to allow more steering angle clearance, and with the Tein's I don't want anything hitting under there. Same with the back, I will likely run a wide rim/tire on the street, and I want it to fit nice against the lip. I also ran the inner seam up 1/3 of the way, and then had it smooth into the inner side of the fender, so there is no seam where the tire will be. I cut the front of the frame where the big bumper used to attach, I cut it similar to the jzx81 but retained the length of the mounting holes in case I want to put shims to adjust the bumper location.

Feb. 11, 06

WHEELS!!!!!!!!
Motegi Touge Gunmetal
Bought from TireTrends.com cheap as my street set. Located in Canada, they were a good deal considering I don't have to pay much shipping and there are no customs either. If they're good enough for Formula D drivers, Tanner Foust, Verena Mei, and Daijiro Yoshihara, I'll take a set. Plus they offer quite a heavy amount of lip considering the offset. I'm not that hot on Motegi stuff, but these will do for now.
17 x 9J +24mm
18 x 10J +30mm

March, 06

Remanufactured Z32 turbo front calipers and all new OEM hardware. Refinished them with VHT black caliper paint. Also got a new MA70 supra turbo clutch master cylinder to go with my supra clutch frame and drilled and bolted it up.

April 4, 06

2 3" mandrel U's. Generic "HKS STYLE" mushroom filter. 2 Wilwood 2lb Residual valves for front and rear lines. 2 more Defi D-Gauges.

April 18, 06

Speedhut.com 4" stepping motor tach. White face, silver bezel, reverse EL silver numbers to match the Defi D-gauges. Tach should setup easy with it's easy adjustment for almost any motor from 1 to 12 cylinders and all types of tach signal. Cool that they have custom colour options and 5 LED prgressive shift light.

May, 06

Got a cheap engine damper to try and save the JZA70 engine mounts, going to bolt it to the A/C bracket and weld the mount to the frame next to the PS pump. Got a dry carbon panel for my gauges from eBay, some ARP wheel studs, and bought my 1 piece steel driveshaft from driveshaftshop.com I ordered an 89-92 Supra Turbo shaft @ 53.75". Also got all new Ebrake cables and brake hoses (raceconcepts.net dropped my MX83 stainless hose order and I couldn't contact them for an entire month LOL, talk about bad service) so I just bought normal hoses. Also ordered up a set of RCA (Roll Center Adjusters) from Techno Toy Tuning

June 5, 06

Got a spare 1JZ from Tiger Japanese Engines in Toronto for $600USD. I bought it for the turbo's, since mine seems to be too loose, and likely will pump oil smoke when I try to pass my emissions test.
June 12, 06

got a 4"x3" flex pipe for the downpipe to prevent cracking, also bought my exhaust setup for after the axles.

Feb. 25-26, 06

Installed new tie rod ends and boots on the steering rack, installed it and made a new low-pressure hose connection to the resivior. Installed a 1990 4Runner V6 throttle cable, fits great. Installed the steering column, and loosened all the bolts in the front suspension for easy removal later. Worked out the AE92 clutch master cylinder placement with remote resivior, started to modify the e-brake handle for easy access. Started to bash the tunnel to make room for the R154. Brakes and brake hardware will go in next if raceconcepts.net ever ships me my stainless lines. If that comes in this week I'll be back on track to put the engine in.
March, 06

Was down for 2 weekends because of other stuff I had to do, I bought another 1990 parts car for the mint gastank, rad and PS rack. I managed to make a custom e-brake handle and get the line hardware I need for the brakes. I checked out the street wheels on the car (rear 18x10j), they'll be ok. Roughly mounted and drilled the rear holes for the bumper, and made the brake lines for most of the car excluding the proportioning valve and passenger side front. I made the ebrake handle from a small TOM'S shift knob and welded a bolt to the tip of the brake handle. Finished it off with a piece of aluminum pipe that's held on by the knob. still need to bend it up a little more, but the knob will make it easy to use. Also put the Walbro 255 in the new tank, and mounted the tranny bracket.

April 22-23, 06 -ENGINE BAY

Planned out build deadlines on paper, now that I've got what I need, major components are getting done every weekend starting now.

This weekend was bay prep, got all the pedal hardware/frames/masters mounted, all new brake lines bent and double flared with new fittings. Including the 2lb residual valves for front/rear, also made a cooling loop for the new PS line connection that runs up and down the frame rail on the driver side. Ran the rear brake line inside the interior and installed the Wilwood proportion valve. Also cleaned and assembled the adapted JZA70 motor mounts and JZX81 brackets. Made a new clutch line with fitting ready to hook to the clutch.
April 29-30, 06 -ENGINE PREP

Sorted the engine out, there was about 14 things needed to be done.
1. Oil dipstick mount
2. Sorting the 1JZ EA2 body connector wires and wiring it through with the main harness
3. Installing the DEFI Oil pressure sensor
4. Replacing the oil cooler lines
5. Replacing the oil filter (Napa 1515 used, but Napa 1348 works too)
6. Sorting a few extra vacuum lines (for JZA70 heater control unit and cluster boost gauge)
7. Replaced 1 exhaust stud
8. Install the DEFI water temp sender and remove the JZA70 cluster connection and sensor
9. Clean up the wires going to the alternator
10. Block off the heater hose connections
11. Install the throwout bearing on the new clutch
12. Install the clutch
13. Bolt up the tranny and clutch fork
14. Remove the shifter

MAY 6/7, 06 -ENGINE INSTALL

Putting the engine in, I thought I had made enough room for the R154, nope. That thing is a monster. Spent a good 3 hours with an air chisel with a hammer end under the car blasting the area ahead of the shifter. Once it was really really pounded the tranny fit right in with no problem. I fished the wires through the enlarged heater hose hole I made using the JZA70 harness rubber plug. I also found out the A/C bump on the firewall was kinda in the way, so I bashed it in a little and repainted it just to provide clearance. Once the tunnel and A/C bump were done the rest was easy.

MAY 13/14, 06 -WIRING, START ON DRIVESHAFT

I spent the entire weekend on wiring because the cooling can be done anytime, and I measured tthe driveshaft I want made. The original is badly rusted and the u-joints are not servicable, so I am going to have to get one made. I'm also still waiting for speedhut to ship my Tach, and I decided I can't hack the digital cluster the way I wanted to, so I put the dash off for now till I get the gauge.
MAY 20/21/22, 06 -WIRING

I still haven't received my ubends from ubendman on ebay, so I can't do squat with the exhaust, and I need my LCA's before I put in my suspension.. haven't received them either, even from NAPA.. ?? I only had a little time to do wiring this weekend, had to go visit my family and do some other things that took up my time :o.
MAY 27/28, 06 -WIRING, COOLING, TIRE SELECTION

Decided to just catch up without what I need. Ordered my driveshaft from driveshaftshop.com because I found out the local place 'Malmburg Drivetrain' doesn't know anything about making high performance driveshafts for imports, so I went to the best source. I got the cooling system almost done, and the rear battery mount, 1gauge wire, negative terminal mount, and new positive terminal all in. Decided to go with Falkens for the street set. FK-451 215/45/17 front 245/35/18 rear. The front's will match well with tipical cheap 205/55/16's I wanna run on the rear for track runs. These are 280 treadwear for the front, and the tipical 16's on the back are around 360 treadwear.
JUNE, 17, 06 -WIRING

Driveshaft arrived perfect, also have had lots of holdups, mostly outside of the garage with family and work. Most of the wiring is done and should be completed by the 23rd. All the Defi gauges are wired in, and unnecesary wiring has been removed (to be weighed LOL). I also bought my tailpipe muffler setup, which should arrive soon, as well as a 3x4" flexpipe for the downpipe to prevent cracking. I bought a second 1JZ motor for parts ($600 eBay) and also bought the Falkens, which I just recieved the front pair yesterday. All that is left is finish the wiring, install the fuel system and tank, install the brakes, suspension and make the exhaust system. then I can get it e-tested, and continue the modifications once the car is on the road.
AUG, 8, 06 -HEAD BANGING

Lots of work and seems like nothing gets anywhere. Installed the brakes and pads but I found out I got 2 driver side calipers from NAPA, so bleeding the right side is going to be a pain. the intercooler went on great but the bumper needs hacking to fit now. the fuel lines went in ok with the new filter attached by a steel/rubber hanger. the suspension went in ok but the Tein swaybar links are stupid. The gastank went in except the bolt threads were rusted and stripped, I love rust, had to make new SAE threads and bolt the thing in hard. The subframe is in, but it's already starting to rust, and the metal plate for the e-brake hardware is pretty thin. One of the 245/35's on the 18x10's doesn't want to hold air under 40psi, neither does the right front tire, the valve stem that came with that 17x9 was defective so i put in a new needle. The differential went in no problem, but I'm just running the stock MA70 LSD fro now until I have time to do a proper install of the $$$$ ATS diff. The LCA's showed up, they were on backorder for ever, but I got them for double the original price. After installing the brakes the rotors rusted instantly in the seemingly hot 90% lake effect humidity we get here... yuck, had to crack out more of the VHT caliper paint. I tried to adjust the rear camber from what looks like 3 deg, and the bolt just snapped off like nothing. did I mention I love rust.

August 21, 06 -IT RUNS!!

Got the wiring sorted, and started it up, ran like a champ except it wanted to idle really REALLY slow, like I could read the waterpump belt number! incredible motor if it can idle THAT SLOW!!?. Got the dash and gauges together, put the coolant and ps oil in. Sounds really great and can't freaking wait to get it o the road!!!

September 3, 06 -Exhaust FINALLY!!!

Put the exhaust system together with a lot of tinkering I got it to fit close in under the car to avoid getting whacked. sounds like a champ! fully painted in VHT high temp flat black. Also got the spanking sweet cluster together and all five 2 1/16" gauges now have homes too on the dash.
September, 06 -Took it for a drive!

Took it out for a little test run. The thing freaking ROCKS!! gotta get a few things done now, and it'll be ready for action.
September 25, 06 -Still working on things

Got most of the essential gauges for the dash working, and installed the works. Still need a few more things before I can get it E-Tested.

May 5-7 07 -Bumper paint and E-test

After the winter storage, I finished off the bumpers with some paint, and fixed up a few little things to make it roadworthy enough for the trip to the Emission test.

Rolling/Idle tests:
HC ppm 162/273 and 208/300
CO% 0.68/2.17 and 0.47/1.50
NO ppm 1993/2868

June 07

Car received appraisal at $10K. Now i've got insurance! YAY!!!

July 07

Driving the car to work regularly. Car hits on bumps, but feels awesome. I bought a Odessey PC925 Racing battery to replace the crappy battery I had relocated to the rear spare location. I mounted the Odessey PC925 inbetween the rear strut towers, in a CNC'd mounting bracket that bolts through the floor. The Battery came from HRP World

October 07

Put it away for winter. It's getting cold out, and there's no heater in the car, so I can't drive without a defroster!

January 08

Researching upgrades. 2JZ-GE, 1UZ, single turbo.. I've found a kit from Driftmotion that could allow me to use a nice rebuilt CT26 with the 1J, maybe I'll try it out.

April 08

Fixed my 2tight brix2 style seats so i'm more comfy in there, added a nice OMP 3" 4-point, bolted into the car perfectly. Took the car out a bit for some testing, but the turbos haven't been acting too well since the winter storage. they sounds weird and don't really want to make more than about half boost. they kinda die at higher rpms. and they're starting to leak more all the time..

May 08

I've settled on a fix for the turbos. I budget single kit from Driftmotion. 57 trim T4 Garrett 60-1 thrust bearing turbo setup with an AFC Neo. should be the right ticket for decent response with low cost.
Built a simple car trailer to get the car to the track and back in one piece. Installed the ATS diff in a second housing I had, new seals and bearing too. G from serialnine.com is hooking me up with a the rear suspension arms i need to align the car properly and build a really decent rear end and eliminate the driveshaft angle vibration.
